Optical cable, also known as Toslink, is a type of fiber-optic cable that carries digital quality audio such as PCM (2 channel digital audio) and Dolby Digital (6 channel digital audio). This cable is basically a light-pipe - it carries a red light generated by the receiver to a stereo receiver. Only the receivers that have Dolby Digital capability can use this cable: 4000 and 5000 (with AC-3 adapter), JVC-DVHS (IRR), 4700, 4900, 6000, DISHPlayer 7100/7200, DISH 501/508, DISH Player-DVR 510, ViP 622 DVR, ViP 722 DVR, and the DISH 721. The 4000 and 5000 can have an AC-3 adapter installed that adds an optical output to these receivers.
DISH Network doesn't recommend runs over 12 feet.
If a properly installed optical cable begins to fail, symptoms could include intermittent or choppy audio, pops or squeals similar to decode errors, or complete loss of audio.
