Symptom
Remote does not operate the receiver, TV, VCR or auxiliary equipment. Improperly operating remote.
Cause
Incorrect remote for location. Bad batteries. Incorrect remote address. Missing UHF Remote Antenna for UHF/UHF Pro receivers.
Prevention
Use the correct remote for the location. Maintain fresh batteries in the remote.
Troubleshooting
Many remotes will work with different receiver models. The 8.0 remote only outputs UHF Pro when in SAT mode. The IRR, and some 2000, 4000 and 5000 receivers do not receive IR signals. The Quick Reference guide may offer assistance with remote addresses and locations.
- Is the remote a DISH Network remote that was shipped with the system or received as a replacement? Look for the DISH Network logo on the bottom of the remote.
No
Please contact the manufacturer of the remote for further assistance. Detailed instructions may be included in the owners' manual that came with the equipment. If not, there may be a toll-free technical support number listed.
Yes
- Verify fresh batteries are properly installed.
How To?
- With models 3900, 4900, 111, 211/411, 222, 301, 311, 322, 381, 501/8/10, 522, 622, 625, 721, 722, 811, 921, 942; while in SAT mode, press View or View TV on the remote to check for the Low Battery Indicator on the View Banner.

- The mode light will not illuminate if the batteries are dead.
- Open the battery cover carefully. Look to make sure the batteries are orientated according to the instructions imprinted or printed in the casing. Use the Battery Reference Chart for type, quantity and alignment.
- Verify the remote is in the correct Mode (SAT, TV, VCR, AUX).
How To?
Press the appropriate SAT, TV, VCR, AUX or Mode button at the top of the remote to view the red mode light. If the light does not show and the remote does not operate, replace the remote.
- Address the remote to the device.
How To?
- If you already know the correct code, readdress the remote using that code. If not, or the code does not provide full remote function, look up the appropriate device on the code list.
- With the desired equipment on, press and hold the correct Mode button until all mode button backlights come on (about 3 seconds), then release.
- Use the number pad buttons to enter the number code corresponding to the equipment. The light will blink off after each digit is entered and then return to a steady light. (If addressing in AUX to a TV, use 0 as the first digit. If addressing to a VCR or DVD player, use 1 as the first digit. Amplifiers and Cable Boxes use 2 as the first digit unless the code already has four digits. DVD players can also be addressed to the VCR mode.)
- Press the # (pound) button. If the code entered is valid for the remote, the mode light flashes three times.
- To verify the code works, try several different functions for that equipment. Some codes may provide partial function, or respond differently than the button's titled function. Try the other codes listed for that device until you find one that offers more complete functionality.
- Store the remote code for future use.
- Address the remote to the device using the Power Scan.
How To?
- With the desired equipment on, press and hold the correct Mode button until all mode button backlights illuminate (about 3 seconds), then release.
- For AUX mode Power Scan ONLY: press 0 for a TV, press 1 for a VCR/DVD, press 2 for any other device, then press *.
- Press and release the Power button.
- Press the Up button once a second while pointing the remote at the desired equipment. If the code for the equipment comes up, the equipment will power off.
- Press the POUND (#) button. If the code entered is valid for the remote, the mode light flashes three times.
- To verify the code try several different functions for that equipment.
Note: The Power Scan will start with the last code you put in. If the last code you put in was 656 it will then go to 657 when pressing the Up button when performing a Power Scan. If there is no code programmed into the remote at the time of the Power Scan then it will start with 000 regardless of the type of remote.
- Check for IR interference.
How To?
- The IR remote uses infrared light to control the receiver and other components with a maximum range of 40 feet.
- The remote must point directly at the equipment, with no solid object in the way.
- The IR specific remotes do not have a UHF logo on the bottom. All IR/UHF remotes also send IR commands in SAT mode.
- If you are using a Samsung LN-R408D or LN-R409D television, the issue will appear to go away after its' Flat Florescent Lamp is warm. An IR-to-UHF Upgrade Kit may be used to remedy the issue.
- Does the equipment's original remote work with the equipment?
Why?
Using the original remote will determine if the IR receiver on the equipment is working.
No
Troubleshooting has been completed. The IR receiver on the equipment is not functioning.
Yes
