The DishCOMM Modem uses the power wiring in the home to communicate with DishCOMM compatible receivers through the power cords. DishCOMM compatible receivers can dial out for Pay-Per-View, DishHOME Interactive TV, and other features that require a phone connection, without needing to be connected to a phone line.

Installation
Plug the base unit into an electrical outlet near an established wall phone jack. The indicator light on the base unit will illuminate once it has been plugged into the electrical outlet. Note: Do not plug base or extension unit into non-HomePlug approved surge protectors, plug strips, extension cords, other A/C power extension devices or GFI protected outlets. The equipment works best when plugged directly into electrical outlets.
Insert one end of the phone cord into a functioning wall phone jack.
Plug the other end of the same phone cord into the phone connector on the base unit.
Creating a DishCOMM Network using a DishCOMM Modem
Press Menu on the remote. Go to System Setup, Installation, then DishCOMM Setup.
Select Scan.
The receiver will detect if there is a new DishCOMM Receiver. To add the receiver to the network, Select Yes.
After all equipment is added to the DishCOMM Network, return to the DishCOMM Setup screen and select Test to test the network, or Done to save the changes.
Ensure that all receivers have Remote selected on the Phone System menu.
Special Considerations
The DishCOMM Modem and any receivers using the Modem must have their power cords connected directly to the electrical outlet. If a surge protector is required, a HomePlug approved surge protector must be used and the receivers and Modem must be plugged into the HomePlug outlet of the surge protector.
Do not plug the DishCOMM Modem into switched outlets.
Dimmers for home lighting can interfere with DishCOMM. It is not recommended to use dimmers on the same circuit as DishCOMM equipment.
Avoid plugging the DishCOMM Modem or receivers into GFI (Ground Fault Interrupter) outlets. These outlets may interfere with the communications.
Only one DishCOMM Modem needs to be connected to the homes phone system.
LEDs on the DishCOMM Modem indicate current activity on the DishCOMM Network.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does DishCOMM eliminate all of the phone line fees?
As long as there is a phone line connected to one of the DishCOMM compatible receivers or have a DishCOMM Modem installed, the phone line fee will not be charged.
Does DishCOMM cause a security issue with the data since it is all on the power lines?
No. Creating a DishCOMM Network helps to ensure the data is secure since only devices that are part of the network can communicate on the network. HomePlug also includes its own encryption to ensure data security.
Will the data be sent out to the neighborhood?
No. DishCOMM and HomePlug communications are generally unable to pass over the home’s AC meter or power transformer and enter the neighborhood power wiring. In a multiple dwelling unit, such as an apartment, where the AC meter may be shared, security of data is maintained through the creation of a DishCOMM Network and the security that is built in to HomePlug technology.
Does DishCOMM increase the power usage of the home?
No. DishCOMM uses the existing device’s power to function.
Will DishCOMM interfere with the Meter Reader’s equipment for recording my power usage?
No.
Where can an approved HomePlug surge protector be purchased?
Most electronics retailers or stores that sell other HomePlug equipment.
